This client runs sweepers in the greater Kuala Lumpur area. Monsoon season dumps heavy rain from October through March on the east coast — and the west coast gets its share too. The result? Roads coated in mud wash, construction runoff, and decomposing leaf debris. Not snow. Not ice. Tropical sludge.
Why Convoluted Poly Wafer Brush — The Malaysia Spec
The order is convoluted poly wafers on steel core rings. Two reasons.
First: polypropylene bristles. They flex over wet asphalt without gouging it. Wire would scrape the road surface raw — fine for frozen crust, destructive on hot Malaysian pavement where the bitumen softens above 35°C. Poly flicks mud and leaves clear. It doesn’t dig.
Second: convoluted (wavy) profile. No spacers between wafers. The zigzag shape self-spaces the bristle pattern during installation. For a maintenance crew swapping wafers in 32°C heat with 80% humidity, dropping convoluted wafers straight onto the broom core saves 10-15 minutes per assembly. That matters on a fleet of eight machines running daily shifts.
Outer diameters from 400mm to 1160mm (15 3/4″ to 45 2/3″) — this client runs a mixed fleet of Bobcat and Caterpillar skid-steer brooms, so they ordered two size configurations in one batch. Same filament. Same core. Different OD. One shipment, one invoice.
The Aftermarket Reality — And What We Build Around It
Wafer brushes are consumables. That’s not a weakness. That’s the business model. Every sweeper eats through bristles. The question is whether your supplier can keep the pipeline full.
This is our third shipment to this client in 2026. They don’t reorder because we send glossy catalogs. They reorder because the convoluted poly wafer brush they received in March held up through two monsoon cycles without premature bristle loss or core ring deformation.
Standard OEM sizes ship at MOQ 100 units. Custom specs — different ID, different filament diameter, different core ring material, different pin count — start at 2,000. The Malaysia client’s first order was standard. Their second and third were too. But when they upgrade to newer Caterpillar units next quarter, they’ll need a non-standard OD. We’ll run that on the same production line with the same pull-out test and dimensional check. No separate process. Just a different setup.
